You definitely want to stitch down the edges. The lady at Linus that is our appliqué guru uses a blanket stitch on her sewing machine with matching thread. You can also zip zag. Your other option would be to stitch it down as part of the quilting.

There's different colors so that would mean changing threads a bunch. Or using invisible thread. I am not sure I have a blanket stitch but I'm going to check. You have to use cams for a lot of the stitches. Hmmmm. Maybe I need to see if I can come up witha layered stencil and paint it. Or see if the quilt store has fabric with a globe on it. I haven't had luck on line.. at least finding one that's neither too big nor too small for the scale of the rest of the quilt.

I've done appliqué with blatitch stitch and a regular stitch. The blanket one it want fray as much after washing. I've done a pod with the appliqué with the batting and all, I went very slow. Can't wait to see what your making!!!

I don't think I've got a blanket stitch on my machine but I will check. It does have a few utility stitches. I hate teh idea of having to keep changing the thread color. I guess I could try invisible thread.

I love invisible thread! I have washed in hot water and put them in the dryer on high heat and it stays put! I have an extra spool if you need some! It's my best friend❤️.

Honestly I'm getting more and more tempted not to do an applique. If I had any experience I might be more willing to try it. If I could buy fabric with globes on it I would and just applique that circle on. Much more my speed. I may see about a stencil for painting.

I've had only horrible experiences with invisible thread so far. But it was old cheap thread.

I think I'm just tired and in a grumpy mood. I may feel more adventurous tomorrow or this weekend, whenever I get around to trying again.

I think I would use matching thread and just do a shortened straight stitch or zig zag around the edge.

Have a great week!

I don't know what I'm going to do. Maybe I will try to stencil it on the block. The picture is made up of different colors, I will have to keep changing the thread to match.

You too!

I might buy some good invisible thread and try it. All I have is old stuff that was my mom's.
